Vale has activated level 2 of the Emergency Action Plan for Mining Dams (PAEBM) for the Capitão do Mato Dam, at the mine of the same name, in Nova Lima (MG). Due to rainfall exceeding the historical average in the region, some instruments in the structure indicated temporary changes in the water level, which have now returned to normal levels.
The mining company stated that the dam will remain at level 2 until the completion of the technical analysis of the structure's history and current conditions. These studies, called "As-Is," are ongoing, and new technical discussions will soon take place with the independent auditing firm to reassess the situation. Residents of the Self-Rescue Zone (ZAS) had already been relocated in November 2019 due to reinforcement work on the Vargem Grande dam.
